Sitting on a chilly platform at York station this morning and I become acutely aware of my choice of attire as the temperature drops below 3°C. Despite this, my extremities are incredibly toasty thanks to 21 years working with wool, bitterly cold Yorkshire winters and an obsession with product testing.
So here I am sharing my first blog post of winter secrets to keep the cold at bay…
Tip #1 – Wear Wool
Wool is nature’s lightest and finest insulator. It’s sustainable with long lasting wear and we use merino for its low pill quality. Even our lambswool is from merino sheep.

Tip #2 – Merino Base
Choose warmth next to your skin. Wear a camisole to warm your midriff. I like a sleeveless vest to keep my shoulders warm.
This is a great tip for keeping cosy in a blouse – use a short sleeve, or long sleeve vest, for a second skin warmth, much more chic than lots of layers on top. You will honestly wonder how you ever managed without one!

Tip #3 – Warm your Hands and Feet
Choose a longer sock. I love the lasting quality of Falke, worth every penny. I am already wearing my merino knee high socks, they are incredibly comfortable and fine enough to fit in my winter boots (I have size 8 feet!).
My fingers numb easily so I like a smart wool glove with cosy lining. My Nina gloves are on their third winter and they are still looking brand new. It’s worth investing in a good pair.

Tip #4 – Double Layers for Kidney Warmth
I wear our merino briefs with my vest – you get double the layer of warmth over your kidneys (choose midi or long length).
Kidney health is really vital to your well-being. My grandma was right on that one. So I designed the Rosella brief almost 20 years ago to look feminine with no VPL and to keep my bottom cosy!
